Program: Planning a new neighbourhood in Sichuan province

From the beginning of this project, there has been an interest in the way people experience the public space in China, whose rapid urbanization leads to a loss of identity. The activities carried out, the relationship with traditional typologies and its evolution are some of the issues that have accompanied me throughout the project. Since Imperial times the conception of these places has been changing; the great squares of Mao's era, the microcosm of parks and narrow streets, and even the residual empty spaces in between today's high-rise buildings.

The project, carried out from a
social sustainability basis, proposes to create a net of diverse and inclusive public spaces where rural and urban residents and tourists can gather. The intention is to connect the existing nodes from the site with a new network of outdoor spaces. This new organization is based on three axes of different nature; the urban-cultural, the local and the green.

Each of these places is designed taking into consideration its relationship with the
different building typologies and densities, thus creating public, semi-public and private areas for the community. From a global perspective, the objective is to connect the network of public spaces with the city and establish future mobility and social connections between the different neighbourhoods. From a local perspective, the idea is to develop each of these new spaces while keeping its own atmosphere and creating a heterogeneous complex. Focusing on social sustainability will enhance Dujiangyan's cultural identity and help rebuild the community spirit of the place, leading to a complete sustainable outlook in the future.

The cultural axis is based on the urban and contemporary concept of public space between high-rise buildings that exist nowadays. This north-south connection includes some preserved buildings on the site, conceived as oportunities to develop public institutions related to Dujiangyan's tradition and history or services for the new neighbourhood.

The
local axis introduces the waterfront lifestyle to the place; such as tea houses, board games, gastronomy or local shops. This linear public space is inspired by the traditional chinese street. Introducing a new housing typology possibilites a more human scale together with the creation of small pockets where to carry out the activities mentioned before, thus emphasizing the community feeling.

The
green axis provides the unique landscape of the Longchi National Forest Park to the area, creating a green parenthesis that dialogues with the concatenation of existing green areas. This space is the last phase of the project, since once the people gathered in the other public spaces will establish a cooperative relationship, they will be able to help build the park and carry out its maintenance.
