Under the veraison
Intervention proposal in Viña Lanciano; Logroño
Concéntrico 07 - Festival Internacional de Arquitectura y Diseño de Logroño | Spring 2021
In collaboration with Aina Marquès
Ephemeral intervention
The Viña Lanciano enclave, located in a border region of La Rioja and embraced by a meander of the Ebro river, is distinguished by the presence of the Mantible Bridge; a construction of great heritage value from the Roman periof of the 2nd century. The site where the intervention is carried out is on the path that connects Bodegas LAN with the Cantera Vieja plot of the vineyard. This privileged location is characterized by its proximity with the bridge and its singular landscape; an infinite horizon of vineyards with the Sierra de Cantabria and Mount El Rincón as a backdrop.
After inquiring about the fenology of the vine, the veraison phase is discovered; a fleeting state prior to harvesting in which the bunches of grapes change color. Thus, the intervention proposed for the Concéntrico Festival represents this special phase, which indicates the countdown to the Logroño Harvest Festival, held at the end of September. In this way, the temporary essence of this phenomenon is transferred to an intervention that also stands out for its ephemeral nature.
The installation consists of a succession of thresholds, whose transitions between elements are inspired by the different development phases of the vine; a cycle marked by the passing of the seasons. This intervention can be interpreted in various ways, depending on the viewer's point of view. From a withdrawn position, the piece sets a rhythm and frames the distant landscape. From a global perspective of the object, the transition experienced by the ceiling is fully observed. When approaching, the person interacts with the installation in different ways. On the one hand, through the path under the changing nebula, and on the other, being aware of the space of opportunity between elements that makes it possible to be or contemplate the nearby landscape of the vineyard.
Construction strategy
Elements
The arch forms the vertical structureand stands as a static element, capable of structuring and providing rhythm. Its form emerges as the reinterpretation of the Mantible Bridge, which originally had seven arches. Unlike the bridge, crossed above, the sequence of arches is traversed underneath.
The bench gives horizontal continuity and rigidity to the structure; relating to the line of vines and constrasting with the ethereal horizontality of the roof. This element arranged between arches delimits the access and creates a space to sit, rest and even realize carry out wine tastings under the veraison.
The roof is understood as a light and changing element that shows the passage of time. This nebula is in charge of forming a ceiling, responsible of the particular atmosphere of each of the spaces between arches.
Materials
The wood is understood as a heavy, rigid and constant material with which the arches and benches of the installation are built.
The steel cables sew the arches and are tightened to hold and guide the tulle covering, as the wire does in the trellised vine.
The tulle is the protagonist of the installation ceiling; a vaporous material that is placed in a staggered pattern and that through a gradation of tones and the overlap of layers manages to show different densities and transparencies.
